Boy Meets Girl – A relationship Story

I was 21 years old at the time that we met.  I wish I could say that I knew he was the one that I was meant to be with but that was NOT the case.  There is a saying that goes something like this: “You wanna make God laugh? Make plans.” I did make plans.  I was going to be married to a tall dark and handsome man with a nice sized home, a perfectly manicured lawn, three children, and maybe a gold fish (I don’t care for dogs) all by the time I hit the age of 27 or 28. Things didn’t quite turn out that way and I am sooo glad they didn’t.

In Little Haiti where Our Relationship Story started

My husband and I met about thirteen years ago through a mutual friend at a tent crusade on 54th street in little Haiti.  The meeting was memorable but for all the wrong reasons.  He was not friendly, not my ideal type, and a bit dismissive.  My friend told me that he was a nice guy and a great friend and blah blah blah but I couldn’t over the fact that while we were being introduced to each other, he barely even looked at me to  say hello!

We were not being introduced for dating purposes. I just wanted to say hi to my friend and he was standing there talking to her.  After our introduction, I left thinking “how rude!” We didn’t see each other again for another year.  Again, he was talking to my friend when I came over and he was rude again! My friend explained to me that he must have been having a bad day and that he usually isn’t like this.  I thought for sure that every day must be a bad day for him!

Later on, that same year, I signed up for a microbiology class.  On the first day of class he walked in and sat down not too far from where I sat. Him again?! I kept thinking of ways to avoid him throughout the semester because I didn’t want to have to deal with Mr. Grumpy Pants.  A few weeks into class, he asked to borrow my notes since he wasn’t going to be in town.  Those notes were the first of many that we shared along with a new friendship.

The sparks didn’t begin then.  He was dating someone and he still wasn’t my type! To be fair, I should say that I wasn’t his type either.  A year passed and we still stayed in touch.  He broke up with the person he had been dating at the time but didn’t tell me about it for almost a year.  When he did tell me, I thought hmmm interesting but left it at that. It took another year for us to realize that we were inseparable and still not officially a couple.  Well we cleared that up and started to date.

Friendship and Relationship

Dating was like a continuation of the friendship we already shared.  Not to say that we didn’t disagree or have some minor issues but being together came fairly easy for us.  We dated for a year and four months before he popped the question.  I honestly didn’t see it coming!  We were walking along the beach boardwalk and he bent down.  I honestly thought he dropped something because I didn’t even stop to see what he was doing.  I kept on walking.

He pulled my arm to bring me back and then I saw him looking at me a bit nervous. That’s when it hit me that Mr. Grumpy Pants was about to propose!  I said YES of course.  A year later, we were married before God our family and friends.  That day, I can truly say I married my best friend.

It has been 9 years now but it still seems like yesterday.  I guess time does fly when you are having fun! We laugh together, talk to each other like old friends and we pray for and with each other.  At the end of the day, that’s what matters most. Hope you enjoy reading my relationship story.
